Warriors Fall Short At Michigan Tech The Wayne State women's basketball team (9-5, 3-3 GLIAC) dropped its third straight conference game. falling to Michigan Tech, 65-62, on Saturday (Jan. 12) in Houghton, Mich. The Warriors could not come back from a 23-point deficit at the half (38-15) after outscoring the Huskies by 20 (47-27) in the second stanza. It is the second stop on a three-game road trip with WSU falling to Lake Superior, 70-67, on Thursday (Jan. 10). The Warriors only shot 27 percent in the first half (7-26), compared to 59 percent for MTU (17-29). Senior Kelly Bitters (Dexter) and junior Jessica King (Hartland/Howell) led the team with 12 points each. WSU held a 34-28 edge in the rebounding category. WSU will complete its road trip by traveling to Northern Michigan on Monday, Jan. 14 for a 5:30 p.m. game in Marquette. Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Wayne State womens basketball team dropped a very close, 70-67, decision to Lake Superior State on Thursday night (Jan. 10) in Sault Ste. Marie, falling to 9-4, 3-2 in the GLIAC. After winning nine of their first 10 games, the Warriors have now lost two straight contests. WSU held a 34-32 halftime advantage over the Lakers (9-2, 4-2 GLIAC) and shot 52 percent from the floor (14-for-27) in the second half, but it wouldnt be enough. The game featured 11 lead changes in the second half alone with LSSU taking a 62-61 advantage with 2:43 left in the contest. Junior Keneisha Moss (Detroit/Cody) buried a three-pointer at 2:28 to give WSU a 64-62 lead. Lake Superior tied the game with Alice Duesing scoring two of her 32 total points with a pair of free throws at the 1:24 mark. Sophomore Ebony Vincent (Oak Park/Shrine) hit a three-pointer with 1:11 left to take a 67-64 lead. LSSUs Danielle Pettingill countered with a three-pointer to tie the game at 67 with 52 seconds left. Duesing would add a free throw with 23 seconds remaining, which gave WSU possesion of the ball and 20 seconds left. Senior Anavia McClures (Detroit/Henry Ford) shot fell short with four seconds left, which led to a WSU foul. Duesing made two more free throws to end the game at 70-67. Vincent ended the game with a team-high 18 points, while Moss added 14 in the loss. WSU heads to Michigan Tech on Saturday, Jan. 12 for a 1 p.m. showdown in Houghton. |
