Warriors Visit Salina Elementary School

The Wayne State University women’s basketball team visited Salina Elementary school in Dearborn on Tuesday, March 20. The Warriors read books and also showed the students the keys to being a successful basketball player. Here are pictures from that day.

The Wayne State University women’s basketball team finished the season with an overall record of 15-12. Wayne State qualified for the GLIAC Tournament for the second consecutive season. WSU lost in the quarterfinals of the tournament to Gannon, 73-67. The Warriors finished the season with a record of 10-2 at home. Below are WSU’s top performers this season.

Tiffany GrubaughTiffany Grubaugh (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem) – A freshman guard, Grubaugh was named GLIAC Freshman of the Year and was named First Team All-GLIAC South Division. She led the Warriors in scoring (13.3 ppg) and three-point field goals made (49). Grubaugh scored in double figures 17 times this season. She recorded one double-double on the season against Ferris State (1/13) with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Grubaugh scored a season-high against Rollins College posting 33 points. Grubaugh led the Warriors in scoring 11 times this season.

Shana LynchShana Lynch (Clinton Township, Mich./Fraser) – The sophomore forward was named to the All-GLIAC South Division Second Team. Lynch was second on the team in scoring (13.1 ppg) and rebounding (6.0 rpg). Lynch was named GLIAC Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 5. Lynch scored in double figures 17 times this season. She recorded four double-doubles on the season including an 18-point and 11-rebound performance against Gannon (2/28) in the GLIAC Tournament. Lynch scored a season-high 30 points and 12 rebounds against Mercyhurst College (2/01).

Jessica King (Hartland, Mich./Howell) – The sophomore forward was third on the team in scoring (10.3 ppg), second in blocks (17) and second in steals (48). King scored in double figures 15 times this season. King scored a season-high 20 points against Northern Michigan (1/06). King led the Warriors in scoring four times.

LaTisha MartinLaTisha Martin (Detroit, Mich./Dominican) – A junior guard, Martin led the GLIAC in assist/turnover ratio (2.38) and was named to the GLIAC South Division All-Defensive Team. Martin led the Warriors in assists (177) and steals (66). She set a WSU single-season record for assists. Stephanie Stone set the previous record in 1978-1979 with 156 assists. Martin is 16th on WSU’s career list for assists. Martin scored in double-digits five times this season. She had two double-doubles on the season. Martin dished out 10 or more assists five times this season. She was also the third leading rebounder on the team (4.7 rpg).

Rebecca Barok (Dayton, OH/Vandalia Butler) – The junior center led the Warriors in rebounding (6.1 rpg) and blocks (19). Barok scored in double-digits seven times this season. She had two double-doubles on the season. Barok led the Warriors in scoring twice and led in rebounding seven times.

Jen Amy (Birch Run, Mich.) – The senior forward was sixth on the team in scoring (6.5 ppg) and sixth in rebounding (3.5 rpg). Amy scored in double-digits eight times this season. Amy had one double-double on the season scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 rebounds against Rochester College (1/20). Amy scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds in her final game at the Matthaei Building against Findlay (2/17). Amy finished with 471 points and 270 rebounds in her WSU career.

Nikki Jackson (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) –The sophomore forward/guard was seventh on the team in scoring (5.7 ppg.). Jackson scored in double figures five times this season, including a 16-point performance against Madonna (12/18). Jackson led the Warriors in scoring once this season.

Dianna Sorentino (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) – The junior center played in 23 games for the Warriors averaging 4.3 ppg and 2.0 rpg. Sorentino scored in double figures three times. She scored a season-high 12 points against Michigan-Dearborn (2/05). She led the Warriors in field goal percentage (.613) and free throw percentage (.909).

Ebony Vincent (Oak Park, Mich./Shrine) – The freshman guard was second on the team in assists and seventh in steals (14). Vincent reached double-digits twice this season including an 11-point contest against Gannon in the GLIAC Tourney (2/28).

Kyle Arthur (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) – A freshman center, Arthur averaged 2.5 ppg and 1.9 rpg. She scored a season-high eight points against Rochester College (1/20).

Kelly Bitters (Dexter, Mich.) – The junior guard averaged 2.0 ppg and 2.2 rpg. Bitters scored a season-high seven points against Fairmont State (11/21), Northern Michigan (1/06) and Saginaw Valley (1/18).

Samantha Essian (Troy, Mich.) – The freshman forward averaged 1.5 ppg and 1.3 rpg. Essian played in 12 games for the Warriors starting in one contest. She scored a season-high six points against Rochester College (1/20).

Mandi Lemmons (Detroit, Mich./Holy Redeemer) – The sophomore guard averaged 1.1 ppg and 1.1 rpg in 15 contests. She scored a season-high 10 points Michigan-Dearborn (2/05).

Amina Khalif (Scarborough, Ontario/Albert Campbell) – A junior forward, Khalif played in only five games for the Warriors due to injury. She scored three points and grabbed three rebounds against Lake Superior State (12/2).
