WSU Competes At The Spring Rebel Games March 9 The Warriors posted a 3-0 shutout over Lynn in the opening contest of the Spring Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla. Junior Connie Milroth (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) gained her third win of the season (3-3), allowing no runs off five hits. Sophomore Beth Berry (Blissfield) highlighted the offensive attack by hitting her first homerun of the season. March 9 WSU picked up its second shutout of the day with an 8-0 mercy rule victory over Mount Olive in six innings. Junior pitcher Amy Thiede (Riverview) earned her first victory of the 2002 campaign (1-3) after giving up zero runs on six hits. Junior Tiffany Korzetz (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) batted 3 for 4 to lead the team. March 10 WSU recorded its sixth shutout of the season and third straight at the Spring Rebel Games with a 3-0 win over American International. After opening the season with a 0-3 record, Milroth picked up her fourth straight victory after throwing a two-hitter and striking out a season-high 11 batters. Junior Betsy Kirk (Etobicoke, Ontario) led the offense, batting 2 for 3 with a single and a double. March 10 The Warriors allowed their first runs of the tournament, but still picked up a 5-3 win over Shippensburg. Freshman Lisa Gauthier (Burton/Kearsely) got the win, keeping her record perfect at 2-0. Gauthier allowed three earned runs off seven hits before being relieved by Thiede in the 7th inning. Thiede picked up the save, allowing just one hit. Senior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing) hit her first homer of the season, while going 3 for 3. The Warriors play a doubleheader at Florida Southern on Monday, March 11 beginning at 6 p.m. before taking Tuesday off. Wayne State will then continue play at the Rebel Games on Wednesday. March 14 The Wayne State softball team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 2 ranked Bloomsburg at the Spring Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla. on March 14. Junior Amy Thiede (Riverview) suffered the loss, allowing six runs off eight hits, while striking out four. Freshman Jenna McWilliams (Tecumseh) went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Warriors. March 14 The WSU softball squad snapped its three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over Molloy at the Spring Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla. on March 14. The Warriors got on the board first as senior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing) scored in the first inning off a groundout by sophomore Leah Ondrovick (Tecumseh) to five WSU a 1-0 advantage. Molloy would respond with a run in the fourth, but was countered with two Wayne State runs in the fifth that gave WSU the lead for good. Sophomores Beth Berry (Blissfield) and Lindsay Sammut (New Baltimore/Lakeview) each went 3 for 3 in the win. March 15 The WSU softball team won its second straight game at the Spring Rebel Gameson March 15 following a 5-1 victory over Tiffin. After giving up a run to Tiffin in the first, WSU would respond by scoring all five of its runs in the first two innings (one in the first, four in the second) to secure the win. Senior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing) led the offensive attack, hitting 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI. March 15 The WSU softball team suffered a 3-0 setback to Adelphi at the Spring Rebel Games on March 15. The Warriors, who had won their previous two contests at the Rebel Games, couldn't get a run across the plate as the Warriors left eight runners on base throughout the game. Junior Katie Pickhover (Fenton) led the team with a 2 for 3 hitting performance, while freshman Lisa Gauthier (Burton/Kearsely) took the loss on the mound. March 16 The WSU softball team faced off against GLIAC foe Ashland at the Spring Rebel Games on March 16 and came out with a 3-2 victory. Junior Connie Milroth (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) and freshman Lisa Gauthier (Burton/Kearsely) pitched a combined seven innings with Gauthier coming in for three innings of relief and picking up the win. Sophomore Leah Ondrovick (Tecumseh) hit 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBI. March 16 The WSU softball team wrapped up play at the Spring Rebel Games on March 16 with a 6-5 loss to Shippensburg. Junior Amy Thiede (Riverview) suffered the loss on the mound, allowing six runs off six hits. Thiede retired all six batters she faced in the first two innings, before giving up three runs in the third. She settled down and didn't allow a run until the final inning, when Shippensburg scored three times in the seventh, including the game-winning run. Senior Kelly Kashmerick (Flushing) and junior Betsy Kirk (Etobicoke, Ontario) each went 3 for 4 at the plate. Kashmerick also scored two runs and recorded a double and home run in the loss. The Warriors finished the Rebel Games with a 7-4 mark and are now 11-11 overall. The Wayne State softball team moved its record to 8-7 with a doubleheader split with Florida Southern on Tuesday (March 11). The Warriors defeated the Moccasins, 5-1, in the first game and dropped a hard fought game two, 4-3, in eight innings. More information on the Florida Southern games can be found at its web site. |
