WSU Extends Streak To 14 Games

The Wayne State University men’s hockey team extended the nation’s longest current unbeaten streak to 14 games with a 3-1 triumph over visiting St. Lawrence University Saturday night (Oct. 26) at the Great Lakes Sports City Arena in Fraser, Mich.

Sophomore center Billy Collins scored the lone goal of the first period putting a shot over Saint goaltender Kevin Ackley. Nathan Rosychuk earned the lone assist on Collins’ first of the campaign.

WSU extended its lead to 2-0 early in the second period when freshman Derek MacKay netted his first collegiate goal off an assist from Collins.

SLU cut the deficit to one when Jim Lorentz scored 8:34 into the third period. Senior Jack Redwood recorded his third goal of the weekend at the 12:19 mark, which proved to be the game-winner.

Ackley was pulled at the 18:37 mark and the move paid off when Ryan Glenn’s shot from the blueline found the back of the net with 60 seconds left in the third period.

Warrior goaltender David Guerrera made 16 saves, while Ackley turned aside 20 Warrior shots. Each team had six power-play chances with the difference in the game being WSU converted twice with the man-advantage.

Wayne State will take a 2-0-0 record into a six-game road trip beginning Friday at Vermont. The Saints return home with a 1-4-1 mark.
