WSU Holds Annual Green-White Contest The Wayne State University men's hockey team held its annual Green-White game Friday night (Oct. 11) at Great Lakes Sports City in Fraser. Senior Jon Brink (Portage, Mich./West Michigan Warriors) led the White squad, coached by volunteer assistant Marc Fakler, to a 6-2 triumph by scoring twice in the opening period. Other goal scorers for Team White included sophomore Billy Collins (Enderby, B.C./Prince George Spruce Kings), senior Jason Durbin (Trenton, Mich./Danville Wings), senior Steve Nichols (Washington, Mich./Chicago Freeze) and walk-on candidate Ryan Blake (Windsor, Ont.). Sophomore Reegan Rehm (Park Rapids, Minn./Billings Bulls) and Maxim Starchenko (Kharkov, Ukraine/Powell River Kings) scored for the green squad coached by Erik Raygor. Assists and plus/minus was not kept. Senior David Guerrera (St. Leonard, Que./Estevan Bruins) started between the pipes for the White and stopped 17 of 19 shots in 29:47. Freshman Matt Kelly (Hull, Mass./Topeka Scarecrows) played the final 30:13 and stopped all 13 shots he faced. Redshirt junior Marc Carlson (Hingham, Mass./Chicago Freeze) was in the Green cage and stopped 20 of 26 shots. Wayne State plays its first of two exhibition contests on Oct. 12 against visiting Wilfrid Laurier. Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Great Lakes Sports City. The Warriors final exhibition game will be on Tuesday, Oct. 22 in Ann Arbor against the U.S. U-18 team. WSU's first "official" games will be Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26 when the St. Lawrence Saints travel to Detroit. The banner raising ceremony begins at 6:40 p.m. on Oct. 25 at Great Lakes Sports City in Fraser. |
